Short answer: Ask which coating system will be specified and why, how the existing finish will be identified and degreased before sanding, what preparation your target sheen actually requires, where the doors will be sprayed, how the work will be inspected before it's called complete, and how long the finish needs to cure. A conventional painter and a cabinet finisher are not the same trade at different price points. A painter is asked to change a color and protect a surface. A finisher is asked to produce a surface that survives close inspection — uniform under raking light, clean at the edges, consistent in sheen, free of the defects that identify on-site work. Almost everything that distinguishes them happens before the topcoat, which is why the useful hiring questions are process questions rather than portfolio questions.

Solvent and waterborne lacquers, conversion varnish, catalyzed systems, waterborne acrylic-urethanes, and European-style architectural enamels each resolve those demands differently. Lacquer builds and levels beautifully and spot-repairs readily, but requires ventilation discipline. Conversion varnish offers hardness and chemical resistance and is less forgiving to blend in a later repair. Waterborne systems ease the occupied-home problem and give up some flow. None is correct independent of the room.
Ask which manufacturer's technical data sheet they're working from. Application conditions, recoat windows, and cure schedules are published, and a finisher who works to them will say so without hesitation.
2. How will you identify and degrease the existing finish before sanding?
Cleaning comes before abrasion, never after. Sanding a contaminated surface can interfere with adhesion and leave contaminants within the surface profile, contributing to defects such as fisheyes or premature coating failure.
The contamination film is invisible under room light and concentrates exactly where hands go: around pulls, along stile edges, at the top rails above a range. Removing it requires cleaning matched to what's actually present, then abrasion to a uniform profile, then a bonding layer chosen for the substrate underneath.
Identification is its own skill. Factory-catalyzed coatings, conversion varnish, oil-based millwork finishes, thermofoil, veneer, and previously repainted surfaces each respond differently to abrasion and bonding primers. Scuffing everything the same way and hoping is a common shortcut in cabinet refinishing, and it's the one that shows up two winters later.
3. What preparation does the sheen I want actually require?
Every increase in sheen narrows what the surface is allowed to hide. Satin diffuses reflected light and forgives minor irregularity. High gloss reflects a coherent image of the room, so the coating stops concealing the substrate and starts reporting on it. If a finisher treats gloss and satin as requiring essentially the same preparation, ask them to explain how they're accounting for the difference in surface tolerance.
At high gloss the defect list is long and unforgiving: sanding scratches, pinholes, substrate telegraphing, orange peel, dust nibs, dry spray, uneven film build, starved edges, and witness lines from a broken wet edge. None of those are coating defects — they're preparation and application defects that lower sheens simply don't display.
High-gloss cabinetry and architectural lacquering demand a highly refined substrate, because surface irregularities that might disappear under a lower sheen can remain visible under strong reflected light. That refinement comes through progressive abrasive sequences where each grit removes the scratch pattern of the last. Ask about open grain too: species like oak telegraph through most systems unless the grain is deliberately filled, and grain-filling belongs in the original scope, not in a change order.
4. Where will the doors and drawer fronts be sprayed, and how are they handled between coats?
Doors and drawer fronts carry the visible quality of the entire kitchen and are the components most sensitive to airborne dust and to handling. Ask whether they're sprayed off-site in a controlled space or on-site under containment, how they're racked during flash-off, and how they're stored between coats.
Neither location is inherently better. Off-site buys cleaner air; on-site avoids handling damage and shortens the kitchen's downtime. The boxes stay in place either way, so both paths have to converge on a matching finish — ask specifically how that's achieved.
Racking that contacts a wet face, or stacking before the film has developed hardness, produces the print marks and edge defects that surface months later. Recoat timing belongs here as well: recoating inside the manufacturer's window preserves intercoat adhesion, while recoating a partially cured film can lift or wrinkle it.
5. How will you control dust, overspray, and the HVAC system?
Cabinet finishing generates fine sanding dust and atomized coating in the most connected room of the house. A specialist describes containment as engineering — sealed openings, controlled ventilation and air movement, floor and adjacent-surface protection — and has a specific plan for the forced-air system.
The HVAC question is the one homeowners rarely think to ask. A running system distributes dust and vapor through the entire house, and a return near the work area is a direct path into every other room. Ask what happens to the system during preparation and spray, and what happens to the filters afterward.
In homes where cabinetry and millwork sit directly against stone, hardwood, plaster, or original historic woodwork, also ask how those adjacent finishes are protected before intensive preparation begins. They cannot be treated like jobsite wall surface.
6. How do you inspect the finish before calling it complete?
A finish is accepted under light held nearly parallel to the surface, not under ambient room light. Raking light exaggerates every irregularity the eye would otherwise average out — and whatever it reveals at inspection is what morning sun through a window will reveal to you later.
This is the step most residential repaints omit. Factory-quality results require correction cycles built into the schedule rather than treated as rework: defects found under raking light get denibbed, sanded, and recoated before the next stage. Defects found after installation get lived with.
If the answer to this question is a shrug or "we look it over," the inspection standard is your own eye, six months from now, in your kitchen.
7. What's the difference between dry and cured, and what can I do in the meantime?
Dry to touch means the surface accepts light contact. Cured means the film has developed final hardness and block resistance. On cabinet coatings these are often separated by days or weeks, and much of the premature damage to new finishes happens inside that gap.
The consequences are specific: doors closed against frames before adequate block resistance can stick and tear the film; drawer liners and contact paper imprint; cleaning products on a partially cured surface can mark it permanently. Cure varies with chemistry, film thickness, temperature, humidity, and airflow, and the manufacturer's stated schedule governs rather than a rule of thumb.
Ask for written guidance covering hardware reinstallation, door closure, contents return, and early cleaning. A finisher who provides it unprompted has thought past the final invoice.
8. How will touch-ups and future repairs work?
Every cabinet finish eventually takes a chip. What matters is whether the specified system can be repaired discreetly, whether the finisher returns to do it, and what's retained afterward. Ask before work begins, because the answer sometimes changes which system should be specified.
Lacquer generally accepts spot repair readily; harder catalyzed films are often better repaired by refinishing a full component. That's a legitimate tradeoff, not a defect, but it should be a decision you participated in. Touch-up outcomes depend on color, sheen, film age, cleaning history, application method, batch variation, and the size and location of the repair, so a careful finisher won't promise an invisible result in advance.
Ask what gets documented at completion: product, color formula, sheen, and batch. A finisher who can reproduce the specification in two years can repair the work in two years.
9. Is your firm EPA Lead-Safe certified, and are you licensed for my jurisdiction?
For a home built before 1978, this is a legal question rather than a preference. EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule requires firms paid to disturb painted surfaces in pre-1978 housing to hold firm certification and use employees trained in lead-safe work practices, and firms cannot advertise or perform covered work without it. The rule triggers at six square feet of disturbed interior surface — a threshold cabinet preparation clears easily.
Denver and Boulder both hold large stocks of pre-1978 housing, so for many Front Range kitchens and for historic millwork this has a required answer. Ask for the certification, and confirm a certified renovator will be on your job rather than merely on the payroll.
On licensing: Colorado issues no state-level painting license, leaving oversight to municipalities. Ask for the city registration where your home sits, plus current general liability and workers' compensation certificates. 10. Who will actually be in my house?
